ACCESS to Learning, Inc. 2006-2007 Past Events


September 2006

The Steering Committee met at Austin Independent School District's Zavala Elementary School. New members to committees discussed their responsibilities. Creating an e-newsletter was proposed. This year we will update our website regularly. Membership renewal letters will be sent out in October. ACCESS to Learning, Inc. has been invited to be a part of The Edward and Betty Marcus Digital Education Project for Texas Art Museums.


October 2006

The Board met for the first time at The University of Texas, Center for American History. The Board decided their major emphasis would be to support the steering committee's ideas. Concept papers from the steering committees will be sent to the Board members. Board members will decide upon which committee they would like to work.


November 2006

The Steering Committee met at the "Splash" Exhibit, next to Barton Springs Pool. Updates of the website were presented. Two traveling exhibits were designated for February and March in school/member libraries. A joint annual membership meeting will be held on Sunday, January 28th, at 5:30 p.m.at the Capitol Visitor's Center with ACCESS to Learning, Inc. and Friends of the O.Henry Museum and the Susannah Dickinson Museum.

The Board met and decided upon the Steering Committee which they would like to directly support, by studying the Steering Committee concept papers. The updated website was presented.


December 2006

The Board met and was shown a Pachyderm project, created through our work at the 3-year Marcus Foundation Funded, National Media Consortium meetings. Through this project, ACCESS has received a Dell Laptop Computer. Two members visited the Texas Capitol Visitors Center in preparation for the Annual Meeting, January 28th. The ACCESS website: www.austinaccess.org has been updated and was shown to the Board. A proposed 2007-2008 ACCESS budget of $11,050. was suggested, after reviewing the Steering Committee’s Concept Papers.

The Steering Committee met and discussed the January 28th ACCESS Annual Meeting with The Friends of the O.Henry Museum and Susanna Dickinson Museums. ACCESS created the invitations/programs and the museums provided refreshments. The cost of the meeting was shared. The ACCESS traveling exhibit workshop was held at Arthouse and teachers received professional development credit for attending. A Humanities Texas Grant pf $666.00 was received for the traveling exhibits. The first ACCESS e-newsletter was e-mailed to the membership and will be continued on a monthly basis.

The Board met and decided in order to obtain additional information concerning funding, the Board would have their February meeting at The University of Texas at Austin, Hogg Foundation. The Board plans to request funding from private donors, corporations, and foundations.


March 2007

The Steering Committee met at “Splash” at Barton Springs Pool. An In-Kind Contribution Document was distributed for members of the committee to list their hours of work for ACCESS. ACCESS will continue to pay a web person to put our Monthly Newsletter on our website as well as make any necessary updates. It was reported the January Meeting at the Capitol of Texas Visitor’s Center was well attended by both ACCESS and Friends of the O.Henry Museum, Inc. and Dickinson Museum, as was the Exhibits Presentation by Dr. Paul Bolin at Arthouse in February.
The Board met at UT Center for American History. It was decided that if there is no funding by May 1st, the summer institute should be cancelled this year. An offer of ACCESS programs, exhibits, and institute was made to the AISD High School Redesign.

May 2007

The Steering Committee met in May and decided to provide a one-day summer institute on June 1st at Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum. An in-kind mini-grant was received from the Texas Commission on the Arts, which will enable ACCESS to have the institute. ACCESS will submit a proposal for a grant award to Humanities Texas for $5,000 as well as to the Austin Community Foundation for Four-Year Endowment Training.

June 2007

Approximately 20 teachers and museum educators attended the “Out There” ACCESS Summer Institute at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum. Lynne Adelle, author of publications regarding self-taught artists and Michael Garcia, teacher and creator of found objects were the presenters for the institute.
ACCESS to Learning, Inc. had 36 individual and institutional members this 2006-2007 academic year.
